“You can do this, honey.”

His mom’s voice was warm and affirming, and Levar felt it flow through him. As a social worker, she’d always excelled at giving him confidence, but he’d never needed it more than now. He’d FaceTimed his parents around two in the morning East Coast time, knowing that with the three-hour time difference with California, they’d still be up. They would be anyway, after this news. He’d needed to hear their voices, to know that they had faith in him.

“We’re so proud of you, kid.”

His father’s face was serious, the man still in shock over what had happened to the president, but his words rang with pride.

“Thank you, Dad. It’s an incredible opportunity, but I don’t feel ready yet. I became the vice president’s press secretary not even three weeks ago.”

“They believe you can do this. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have asked you. And your press conference went great,” his mom said. “The way you announced the president’s death… And then all those reporters asking questions they had to know you couldn’t answer.”

Levar smiled at the indignity in his mom’s voice. Always standing up for her kids with an intolerance for injustice that made her so good and passionate about her work and that had always defined her.

“They know, but it’s their job to make me reveal more than I want to. It’s my job to prevent that from happening.”

“I couldn’t do it,” his mom said.

His father chuckled. “Darling, the minute someone started tearing up, you’d tell them everything they wanted to know. You’re a sucker for a sad face…and I love you for it.”

His parents shared a look of love, and Levar’s stomach went weak, as it always did when he witnessed the strong relationship his parents had. “I gotta go,” he said when they focused back on him. “It’s gonna be a madhouse here the next few days, so I’m not sure when I can call again.”

His father waved his hand dismissively. “We understand. Do your job, kid. We’ll be watching every press conference.”

“Thank you, Dad. It means the world to me to know I have your support.”

“Always,” his father promised.

“We love you so much, and we couldn’t be prouder. Hang in there and take good care of yourself, honey, okay?” his mom added.

“I’ll try.”

His parents’ encouragement gave him the will to soldier on, but fourteen hours later, he was beyond exhausted. Adrenaline could only keep one awake and fueled for so long, and he'd reached the limits of what his body and brain could handle.

He hadn't slept that night. Probably no one had. Throughout the night, more details had come in about the bombing, and Levar had done several press briefings. He'd talked to the chief surgeon of Johns Hopkins, making sure he was aware of what he could tell the press. He'd had at least ten phone calls from Seth Rodecker, his Secret Service liaison, who kept him continuously in the loop about any developments.

By dinnertime, Levar's brain shut down. Not that he blamed himself.
